Additional Details

Second edition, and first to include the second part; without the advertisement leaf found in some copies stating that the book was printed in 1679. "The first complete edition of the most famous book in the history of chemistry" (Neville), rejecting prevailing Aristotelian and Paracelsian concepts in favor of Boyle's own corpuscular theory of matter. "The Sceptical Chymist is concerned with the relations between chemical substances rather than with transmuting one metal into another or the manufacture of drugs. In this sense the book must be considered as one of the most significant milestones on the way to the chemical revolution of Lavoisier in the late eighteenth century" (PMM). Duveen, page 96; Fulton 34; Neville I, 208; Wing B4022 (this edition); Partington II, 497-99; Printing and the Mind of Man 141 (1661 original edition).
Accompanied by the 1965 facsimile of the original edition, published by Dawsons of Pall Mall in an edition of 500 copies. 8vo, original 1/4 morocco; contents clean.
